1962 Magnavox Model ST-285 HiFi Modern Console

This is an great condition, restored Mid-Century modern Magnavox console stereo model 1ST285R. The Mid Century Modern styled cabinet is built with a solid hardwoods frame and walnut veneers.  It features a 15 watt stereo tube amplifier, AM/FM Radio, the famous Micromatic Magnavox 4-speed automatic record changer, The gliding top panel provides easy access to the phonograph and radio.

Separate tube style amplifier and tuner provide power to the four built-in speakers. Both left and right channels each have one 3-1/2″ and 12″ woofer. The amp is powered with 2 6BQ5 (EL84) tubes.

The 4-speed Micromatic turntable with it’s “Feather Touch” tonearm can automatically play up to 10 vinyl records in succession. At the end of the last record played, the tone arm will return to its rest and and the changer will switch to the off position.

The console was fairly worn and the wood surfaces have been cleaned and waxed with Howard products. The original top panels were in marginal condition and have been re-veneered with matching real wood walnu.t The original grill cloth is intact and also in great shape with no snags or holes.

Electronically the amp and pre-amp have been totally restored using modern components when necessary. The tube pre-amp and power amp have had the electrolytic filter caps replaced and any drifted resistors replaced. All the tubes in the amp and tuner were tested and any that were weak or not working replaced with new or NOS tubes. All the connectors and pots have been de-oxitized so there is no scratchiness to the controls. The 4 original speakers are in excellent shape and sound great with strong clear tone with no buzz or rattles. The record changer automatic turntable has been cleaned, re-lubed; a new idler wheel, drive wheel and stylus installed and functions perfectly. The receiver has been re-calibrated and pulls in strong signals on FM and AM.

A Logitech Bluetooth receiver has been added and connected to the stereo input, and enables wireless connectivity to your iPhone or other bluetooth enabled devices.

This vintage great sounding tube driven stereo is a great example of mid century modern HiFi. Perfect for your vinyl, and FM/AM with options for playback of MP3 devices as well. Please review all the pictures - additional images available by request.
