If you're serious mayhem, you can use a pick-up a bass pick-up that's loud and focused The loud part is obvious: overdriven solos will sustain longer, and harmonics & tapping will be easier to play.

Focus is what you get when you have solid bars for poles. The pick-up "sees" a narrow area of the bass strings, which produces a tight sound: notes won't sound sloppy in the neck position
