Made to Order JLM Audio LA500A 500 Series Optical Compressor/Limiter

This sales post is for the pre-order of JLM Audio's LA500A compressors.  Units are available as matched stereo pairs. If two of them are ordered at the same time then I will calibrate them to match before shipping.  Please allow 7-10 days after the receipt of the kits.  They ship from Australia and usually take a week to arrive in the US once ordered.

NOTE: The video posted is of the original LA500 compressor sold by JLM Audio.  The new kits do not have wire, only ribbon cables, and no more angled pcb's.  The video is to display my build quality more than anything.  Feel free to ask me a question if you have any regarding the kits, the video, the pictures, or anything else.

JLM Audio has managed to faithfully recreate the timeless LA2A/3A compressor sound in the portable and affordable 500 series format. The audio path has been cleaned in order to maximize clarity and headroom but the compression oddities have been retained, preserving the ballistics, depth, and warmth of the LA style units.

These units have been favorably compared to the Inward Connections 'The Brute' compressors but $300 cheaper.

The LED illuminated meter is switchable between VU and Gain Reduction modes.

The variable make up gain knob adds between 0 and 20dB.

When switched to "Off" the unit is relay bypassed and does not pass through the audio path at all. Perfect for quick A-B comparisons.

An internal jumper is provided on the unit for output ground lifting.

For those using Radial Workhorse racks, pin 11 on the card edge connector provides an output to the Mix Buss.

New features have been added as well
There are 3 ratio settings to choose from: 3:1, 5:1, and 10:1

A sidechain high pass filter allows the user to leave the low end of the signal untouched by the compressor, perfect for drums, bass, or particularly low voiced singers. The sidechain can be switched from Flat to 100Hz or 200Hz.

The LA500A units come with pull-pots to engage the newest mods.
Pull the Threshold pot out to engage the Slow Attack feature. Each optical style compressor is unique in its attack speed, so the numbers are not exact and they vary with each compression ratio selected. Here are some general numbers:
In 3:1, slow attack adds between 250 to 500ms to the original attack speed
5:1 adds 25 to 50ms
10:1 adds 15 to 30ms

Pull out the Make up Gain knob to engage the link function when mounted next to another LA500 unit and the 6th pin is connected between the modules (usually already hardwired or switchable in your 500 series rack).

This unit was hand built and calibrated by me. The VU meter's 0 dB has been calibrated to read professional level (+4 dBu [1.228V]).
