I wanted so bad to call this head mint and almost did. The few minimal flaws or blemishes in the tolex are very hard to see in person and in the pictures. This 2 owner uncirculated 100 watt Marshall head is a rare find these days in this condition. The history and story of this amp is below talking about the former factory installed master volume mod etc.
Here at Gordy's Music, my amp tech of 40 years and I are into de-modding vintage instruments and amplifiers back to original. We do 'not' do mods period. So as we always do with every amplifier of ours, he went through the entire chassis cleaning the pots input jacks etc. switching the master volume back to original plugging the hole in the back wherenthe presence control was as seen in picture. The presence control is back in the front where it belongs, he took out the death cap, and the amp in now back to being 100% original except for the plugged hole in the back.
This head has 2 bottoms that we have not picked up yet and the story goes, the second owner passed away and the rig has been sitting in a cozy heat controlled basement for the past 20 years. It is our opinion that this head did not get very much use at all with the tubes being very strong and the amp screams as they do! A very rare find.

The facts & the story:
Here we have a classic, vintage Marshall 100W Super Lead tube amplifier chassis, specifically dating from late 1973 with some later factory inspection markings. Here is the exact breakdown of what the labels, dates, and components tell us:
1. The Inspection Tag (The Smoking Gun)The inspection sticker on the top of the chassis is highly valuable for collectors. It tracks the individual factory workers who built and tested this specific unit:
- Model: It is clearly labeled 100W LEAD A023.
- Assembly (A. & C.): Signed off with initials/handwritten mark.
- Tag Board & Back Panel: Signed off by individual builders (including a signature that looks like Rosemary).
- Test Date: The original test date stamped at the bottom reads 27-11-73 (November 27, 1973).
- The Red Ink Override: There is a secondary handwritten inspection notation in red ink that reads: "Master Vol by Mike Renetta 10-15-76". This indicates that a few years after it left the factory, it was worked on or converted to a Master Volume setup (a incredibly common modification for mid-70s Marshalls to get distortion at lower volumes) by an inspector or tech named Mike Renetta on October 15, 1976.
2. The Small Orange Sticker:
The small sticker on the side of the gold-colored metal chassis reads "ED / B" (with a signature mark). This is the Marshall factory inspector code, identifying who inspected or wired the final chassis layout.
3. Key Electronic Components:
- The Power Tubes: You can see four large output tubes outfitted with spring-loaded metal retainers (claws) to keep them secure in their sockets. Given the model and era, these are a quad of Russian EL34 power tubes, which give Marshall amps their signature "British" rock crunch.
- The Preamp Tubes: The three smaller glass tubes lined up near the blue capacitors are ECC83 / 12AX7 preamp tubes.
- The Capacitors: The large blue cylindrical canisters are iconic vintage Daly brand electrolytic filter capacitors (marked Made in UK), which were standard in Marshall builds during the late 60s and 70s.
- The Transformers: The massive square metal blocks are the heavy-duty power transformer, output transformer, and choke needed to drive a true 100-watt tube circuit.

NOTE: Too cool. Late last summer we shipped a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!
Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
