Why this one costs more than the “tested / as-is” 104s: the power supply on these is what ages out first. This unit’s PSU was fully recapped with Panasonic low-ESR / Nichicon capacitors, every pot / jack / switch was cleaned and serviced, and the whole box was tested end-to-end. Audio path left stock — no mods, no “improved” circuit. Serial AX104-54034 · manufactured 8/31/2000.
What it is: Dual-channel Aphex Model 104 Aural Exciter Type C² with Big Bottom — a rack harmonic exciter that restores high-end presence, plus Big Bottom for deeper, tighter low end without jacking peaks. Classic 1U studio processor (this one: SN AX104-54034, built 8/31/2000).
Most cheaper listings are unserviced survivors. You’re buying documented bench work and a unit that won’t surprise you three months in — that’s the gap.
Service (this serial):
- PSU fully recapped — Panasonic low-ESR / Nichicon
- All pots, jacks, and switches cleaned and serviced
- Fully tested — works flawlessly
- Audio path untouched (stock character preserved)
- No mods
30-day fix-it warranty: covered for 30 days after delivery against defects in the work described. If it arrives DOA or fails in normal use in that window, I’ll repair, replace, or refund. Buyer covers return shipping unless I packed it poorly or it was dead on arrival. Doesn’t cover abuse, wrong mains voltage, or mods after it leaves here. Cheap as-is listings don’t back the sale like this.
What it does: Type C² Aural Exciter rebuilds missing high-frequency harmonics for clarity and presence without a blunt EQ boost. Big Bottom dynamically shapes low end (~20–120 Hz) for deeper, tighter bass with little or no rise in peak output — vocals, bass, and full mixes cut through without harshness or mud.
Condition: Very Good — clean working faceplate, normal light rack wear for a 2000-era unit. Dual-channel controls (Drive/Overhang, Girth/Mix, Tune, Mix; Harmonics + Process) smooth and quiet after service.
Included: Unit + matching 3 ft power supply.
Ships from Maple Grove, MN. Packed as a 1U rack with the face protected. Photos are of this serial (AX104-54034).
