Vintage Ovation Typhoon II Bass 1968-1972 - Red
Here is an Ovation Typhoon II Bass - This model is fretted, 2 pickup, and 30 inch scale. Bass is in very good shape with typical checking on the front. Set up with flatwounds and ready to play. Neck is straight, truss rod turns, and frets have plenty of life in them. Nice flame on the back. Bass has not seen much use in its 55+ year life. Comes with original red lined case.
The 1968-72 era Ovation Typhoon II is a rare, 30-inch scale bass featuring a German made semi-hollow body (maple back/sides, spruce top), and an American made Ovation neck. The Model 1222-2 includes dual single-coil pickups with master volume and dual tone controls, a 3-way switch, rosewood fingerboard, and 21 Frets.
Key Specifications (1968 Typhoon II):
- Body: Double-cutaway semi-hollow construction with bound f-holes, wine-red or natural finish, maple back/sides, and spruce top.
- Neck: Wide profile maple neck with a 30-inch scale length.
- Fingerboard: Rosewood, 21 Frets.
- Pickups & Electronics: Dual single-coil pickups with black bezels, 3-way toggle switch, and master volume/dual tone controls.
- Sealed Schaller tuners
- Unique Characteristics: Known for a "thump machine" sound, lightweight construction, and often used in early 70s media (e.g., played by Danny Bonaduce).
- The Ovation line of semi-hollow body electrics guitars included several models of 4 string bass. The original model was called the "Williwaw" and had 2 pickups. Shortly after, a single pickup version was introduced as the "Typhoon". After the first catalog was printed in 1967, the single pickup model was renamed Typhoon I, and the 2 pickup version was renamed Typhoon II. The body of the Typhoon II is smaller and thinner than the 6- and 12-string electric storm guitars. The top is spruce and the back/sides are maple. The red finish, multiply top binding and the nicely bound f-holes are all very nicely done.
