This was purchased new from Bizarre Guitars in Reno, NV. The guitar arrived in pretty much perfect condition aside from some tooling marks on the neck binding near the upper frets (see pictures).
This was my first Les Paul purchase and I have enjoyed playing it for two years now. Beautiful guitar. Stored in a smoke-free environment and kept in its case when not playing.
Quite a few things to note here. This guitar has dents, dings and scuffs throughout. It is well loved. All are cosmetic. I cannot capture all these in pictures.
The tip of the headstock has a noticeable ding/cracked finish. Two of the tuners had finish chip off. There are various scuffs and dings on the rest of the body. The finish on this is very fragile. Despite being careful with the guitar, it looks like it has taken a mild beating (see pictures).
With that being said, the neck is perfect. No dents or dings, perfectly smooth as it was when the guitar arrived. The neck is chunky. Thick. It plays fantastic. Frets are all smooth and have hardly any visible wear.
The actual Ocean Blue finish on the body looks close to new, but there is a little chip of paint missing on the horn. Also, some barely noticeable scuffs/dings when held up to the light. The bridge volume knob is cracked. I’ll include extra knobs for all controls.
The biggest changes worth noting are the wiring has been completely redone, nut replaced and the neck pickup has been replaced. See list of modifications below:
Modifications:
. Custombucker Alnico 3 Neck Pickup
. Nylon nut - CNC Machined
. Pots changed
- 300K Linear Taper Volume - Gibson Custom Shop NOS CGE (Bridge + Neck)
- 500K Audio Taper Tone - Gibson Historic (Neck)
- 250K Audio Taper Tone - CTS Pro (Bridge)
. Mallory .022uF Cap (Neck)
. Mallory .047 Cap (Bridge)
. Wiring redone (braided wire + cloth wire)
I chose to redo the wiring to make things easier to work on/replace. Changing out potentiometers was an absolute pain with the stock wiring. The entire grounding plate and all four potentiometers needed to be removed in order to replace one.
The nut was replaced with a CNC machined nylon nut. This is the same material Gibson uses on their Historic models. The guitar stays in tune and the nylon adds some warmth to the sound.
Other than that, this guitar plays fantastic. No problems with the wiring, all functions as it should. The guitar has always sounded great, but is surprisingly bright to my ears. I have done everything I can to tame the brightness, but it still sizzles on the top end. Most people have no problem with that sound.
I have tried for the last two years to bond with this guitar and just can’t. It plays fantastic, sounds full and resonant when unplugged, but there is something with the pickups that irks my ears. Could be that I am not a Les Paul guy. I’m sure a pickup swap could help, but I do not want to mess with this guitar anymore. Surely, someone will love it as is.
Included:
. All original paperwork/case candy
. Extra knobs for volume and tone controls
. Original grounding plate
. Original hardshell case (Very Good Condition)
