Fender JV Stratocaster | ST57-85 | MIJ 1982 | Grey Bobbins
Fender '57 RI | ST57-85 | MIJ 1982 from the early JV series.
For sale is a Fender Stratocaster from the very first production phase of the legendary JV series, built by Fujigen in Japan in 1982. The serial number, JV00621, indicates this is one of the earliest instruments in the series.
Collectors consider the JV models the first Fender Japan reissues - modeled after the '57 Strat - and renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship.
Specs:
One-piece maple neck with a "skunk stripe," 7.25" radius, and vintage-style frets; vintage Kluson-style tuners; alder body with a 2-tone sunburst lacquer finish; Fullerton, USA-made "grey bobbin" pickups; Japanese potentiometers and a DM-50 5-way switch; vintage-style tremolo with a steel block.
Cosmetically, the guitar is in good, used condition. The plastic and metal components show only light patina, and the finish has a few dings and dents, plus one notable chip.
The lacquer on the back of the neck has been removed and replaced with an oil finish. At some point, a non-standard nut assembly was installed, which likely required an additional string retainer on the headstock - three small drill holes remain, though they have been professionally filled and touched up with lacquer. It is also worth noting that there is no pencil-date on the neck heel; while this is somewhat unusual, I have never encountered a "JV" series guitar with such a low serial number before. The neck, including the decal, appears entirely original - perhaps this is simply an anomaly.
Technically, the guitar is in good condition. The frets show minor wear but remain perfectly playable, and the electronics function flawlessly. I would, however, recommend either replacing or refining the current nut; while the guitar is certainly playable as is, the nut does not appear to be fitted with complete precision.
As expected from a one-piece maple neck, the tone is snappy and direct, yet retains a warm, woody character.
In short: a fantastic "JV" Stratocaster with a few minor flaws—better suited for a player than a collector—which is reflected in the price.
The guitar will be shipped neck bolt-off.
