The Simmons SDS-V (also known as the SDS5) is a landmark modular analog drum synthesizer introduced in 1981 by Dave Simmons and Richard James Burgess. Widely recognized by its iconic hexagonal acrylic-coated drum pads and futuristic look, it defined the electronic percussion sound of 1980s pop, rock, and synthwave!

Key Features & Design:

• Analog Synthesis: Unlike later digital samplers, the SDS-V uses dedicated analog circuitry—including triangle wave oscillators, white noise generators, and SSM2044 4-pole low-pass filters—to craft physical drum sounds from scratch.
• Modular Rackmount Brain: Housed in a 19-inch rack unit (the "brain"), it features slotted analog voice cards. Standard configurations included a Bass Drum, Snare Drum, and three Tom modules, though the rack could be expanded up to 7 or 8 individual voice modules.
• Sound Character: Famous for aggressive, punchy kicks, sharp snare cracks, and the unmistakable descending ("peww-peww") pitch-bend tom sound heard on countless records from artists like Phil Collins, Rush, and Duran Duran.
• Control & Triggering: Each module provides physical front-panel knobs and controls for pitch, pitch bend, decay time, and noise/tone balance. Units can be triggered via specialized drum pads or external audio/MIDI retrofits (such as Tubbutec or custom MIDI kits)
