Fodera Emperor 5 Standard Special Flame Limba
The Standard Series was created not merely to cut costs, but to offer Fodera's renowned quality at a more accessible price point by utilizing fixed specifications and streamlined production.
Like the Custom models, these are handmade at the Brooklyn workshop.
The "Special" models are what result when we ask for a few personal touches within the margins of those fixed specifications.
For this build, we asked for something interesting for the top wood—and the result is something quite unique.
It isn't quite a standard burl or a typical figured pattern...
At first glance, it looks like it might be lightly tinted, but it is actually a natural finish.
That natural "butterscotch" hue comes from the wood known as Flame Limba.
It appears to be White Limba, featuring a pale base color with distinctive, thick, rippled grain patterns.
While the grain looks bold up close, the overall impression is one of a gentle, understated top—making for a Special model that avoids being overly flashy.
(Rest assured, if you change the viewing angle, you can indeed see the flame—albeit subtle—living up to its name.)
Just when I thought the understated top was the main feature... wait a minute...
The center of the headstock is white.
Although it uses the standard 3-piece maple neck, they selected a piece of maple for the center strip that is exceptionally white. It creates a look reminiscent of the white racing stripes on American race cars—a really interesting touch.
Oh, and while the "butterfly" logo on the Standard usually comes in Buckeye Burl, this one features a matching Flame Limba butterfly.
Discovering these little details is part of the fun of the Special models.
(Even the store manager often overlooks them!)
As for the hardware and electronics, it follows the Standard specifications: black hardware, Fodera/Duncan pickups, and a Trickfish preamp. Despite having an alder body, it weighs in at just over 4kg and offers a balanced feel that translates directly into its sound; it delivers a clean, honest, and relatively flat response—avoiding overly heavy mids—thanks to its manageable weight.
This character is likely influenced by the classic combination with the rosewood fingerboard.
The "70s-style" rear pickup placement may also contribute to this clean, defined tone.
While the sound is refined and polite in its flat setting, it remains unmistakably "Fodera"; boosting the treble and bass allows the sound to open up and gain real punch, making the playing experience truly exciting.
Thanks to the 70s pickup spacing, the slap tone cuts through nicely, even with the alder body.
If you want a bit more forward presence, simply boosting the mids slightly does the trick.
Neither flashy in looks nor sound, this "Emperor" model is a reliable, high-quality instrument built for a long-term musical partnership.
It’s the kind of bass that lets you fully immerse yourself in the music.
