I suppose I don't need to explain what the "Special" designation entails anymore, do I?

While based on the Standard model, the "Special" allows for custom specifications tailored to one's own preferences—though please allow me to explain the details just this once.

Without an explanation, this might simply look like a Standard model with a maple top.

However, the top wood is Birdseye Maple—a material that has been rising in price recently.

If you look closely, you can clearly see the abundance of "bird's eye" figures.

Even so, compared to Flame or Quilt maple, it is a rather understated top.

Pair that with a pitch-black ebony fingerboard, and the overall aesthetic is one of calm, monochrome elegance.

You might expect a "Special" to go in a flashy, bold direction...

Yet, this instrument takes the exact opposite path. Its simplicity—and the dignified presence that comes with it—is precisely what makes this Fodera truly "Special."

Looking a bit closer, the alder back is actually a highlight worthy of admiration in its own right.

You can see bold, thick, and fluid grain patterns that rival even ash in their intensity.

(That’s why I included plenty of photos of the back.)

There is also a subtle, hidden detail: the butterfly logo on the headstock. While the standard spec calls for Buckeye Burl, this one quietly features Birdseye Maple instead.

It is these kinds of meticulous details that gradually make you realize, "Ah, this really is a 'Special' model."

Incidentally, the standard 3-piece neck also shows traces of birdseye figuring; it seems they considered the instrument's overall character right from the material selection stage.

As for the sound—it is safe to say it mirrors the visual aesthetic.

It centers on the solid mid-range of alder, with the ebony fingerboard adding a touch of tightness and cohesion.

However, thanks to its light weight, the sound isn't overly heavy or dense.

It delivers that reliable, classic Emperor sound—exactly as the appearance suggests. The sound is flat and natural. With the new Trickfish preamp, you can fully boost the treble without any harshness—perfect for making slap lines cut through the mix or for driving more signal into a distortion pedal.

The low end is already robust, so only slight adjustments are likely needed.

The mids are somewhat understated, so you might want to boost them a bit while toggling through the selectable frequency options.

Its ease of use and understated looks allow it to quietly deliver impressive performance across a wide range of situations.

There is something special about an instrument that doesn't scream for attention at first glance but makes you think, "Now *that* is classy," once you take a closer look.
