1997-2000 Fender Stratocaster ST62-70TX Ocean Turquoise Metallic w/ Texas Specials (MIJ)
Representing one of Fender Japan’s higher-spec takes on the classic early-’60s Stratocaster, the ST62-70TX combines traditional ’62-inspired construction with upgraded USA-made electronics and the exceptional craftsmanship associated with Japanese Fender production of the era. Built by Dyna Gakki in Japan between 1997 and 2000, this example features a lightweight alder body finished in striking Ocean Turquoise Metallic, paired with a rosewood slab fingerboard and classic white appointments. Weighing just 3.4kg, it offers excellent balance and resonance while retaining the unmistakable look and feel of a vintage-inspired Stratocaster.
The maple neck is paired with a dark rosewood slab fingerboard featuring traditional white dot inlays, closely following the construction and aesthetic of Fender’s early-’60s instruments. Featuring a 25.5" scale length, slim-to-medium C profile, traditional 7.25" fingerboard radius and 42mm bone nut, the neck has a comfortable vintage Fender feel with a slightly slimmer profile that remains effortless in the hand. The 21 vintage nickel silver frets further reinforce the period-correct playing experience, while the semi-gloss polyester neck finish provides a smooth, naturally familiar feel without the overly slick character of a heavy gloss finish. Fret life is solid here with 85% life left with only very minor signs of wear.
Electronics consist of three Fender Texas Special single coils, delivering increased output and midrange presence while retaining the clarity, articulation and unmistakable character of a traditional Stratocaster. Measuring 6.2kOhms in the neck, 6.5kOhms in the middle and 7.3kOhms at the bridge, the progressively hotter set provides excellent balance across the three positions. The neck is warm and rounded with plenty of definition, the middle offers classic Strat chime and openness, while the hotter bridge adds extra bite and authority for driven tones. Combined with the familiar five-way switching arrangement, the ST62-70TX covers everything from glassy cleans and hollow intermediate-position tones through to punchier blues and classic rock sounds.
Presented in excellent vintage condition, this example has been very well preserved with only light signs of honest use consistent with age. The guitar has been professionally setup with D’Addario 10-46s and plays beautifully with comfortable low action, excellent intonation and stable tuning throughout. An increasingly desirable Japanese-market Stratocaster, the ST62-70TX combines lightweight alder construction, classic ’62-inspired appointments and factory Fender Texas Special pickups, with the Ocean Turquoise Metallic finish making this 3.4kg example an especially striking representation of Fender Japan’s late-’90s output.
