HHX Evolution 16" Crash + 18" O-Zone Crash Combo
A complementary pair of professional SABIAN HHX Evolution crashes, developed in collaboration with Dave Weckl.
This package combines the fast, shimmering voice of the 16" HHX Evolution Crash with the dark, explosive character of the 18" HHX Evolution O-Zone Crash. Together they provide two distinctly different crash voices while retaining the touch sensitivity, control and tonal character of the Evolution series.
Both cymbals are pristine and unplayed and originated from factory cymbal packs.

NDG Unplayed Condition
At Nick's Drum Gear, unplayed means the cymbal has never been owned or played by an end user. Many of our cymbals originate from factory cymbal packs, giving them a known history from day one.
Because they do not include a manufacturer's warranty, they are represented as unplayed rather than new.
These cymbals have been carefully handled, inspected and stored and show no stick marks, keyholing or edge wear.
16" HHX Evolution Crash
Developed with Dave Weckl, the HHX Evolution Crash delivers a fast, shimmering response with a smooth, musical envelope. Its thin profile produces a buttery feel under the stick, while the HHX hammering adds projection and clarity without becoming harsh.
Sound Profile
- Attack: Fast and glassy with immediate bloom
- Tone: Warm, dark foundation with shimmering highs
- Feel: Buttery, responsive and highly touch-sensitive
- Decay: Smooth and controlled
- Projection: Clear presence without excessive volume
This is the more conventional crash voice of the pair—fast enough for accents but broad and musical enough to serve as a primary crash.
18" HHX Evolution O-Zone Crash
The Evolution O-Zone provides the contrasting voice. Its perforated design produces a fast, trashy accent with a dark, raw character, giving the pair considerably more tonal range than two conventional crashes.
Sound Profile
- Attack: Fast, explosive and immediate
- Tone: Dark, raw and trashy
- Volume: Quick burst without excessive lingering wash
- Response: Extremely sensitive and immediate
- Use: Accents, breakdowns, color crashes and modern textures
It speaks quickly and gets out of the way, making it an excellent complement to the smoother 16" Evolution Crash.
STR Rating — Style, Tonality & Response
Fusion / Progressive: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The conventional 16" crash and trashier 18" O-Zone provide two highly responsive but distinctly different voices.
Studio / Session: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fast activation and controlled decay give both cymbals excellent recording characteristics.
Pop / Worship: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
The 16" provides the smooth primary crash while the O-Zone adds a contrasting accent voice.
Rock / Modern Alternative: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Good cut and tonal variation without requiring excessive volume.
Jazz / Contemporary Jazz: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Highly responsive at lower dynamics, with the O-Zone particularly useful as a color or effects voice.
Nick’s Notes
This combination makes more sense to us than simply pairing two similar crashes.
The 16" Evolution Crash gives you the smooth, fast and musical Evolution voice for conventional crash work. The 18" Evolution O-Zone then adds something completely different: a darker, trashier and more explosive accent.
Both retain the sensitivity that defines the Evolution series, but they perform different jobs. For a player building an HHX Evolution setup, this is a very useful two-crash foundation without duplicating voices.
Note on HHX Hammering
SABIAN HHX cymbals feature extensive hammering as part of their manufacturing and voicing process. Visible hammer impressions, surface irregularities and variations in the bronze are intentional characteristics of these cymbals and are not dents or evidence of previous playing.
These variations contribute to the complex tonal character associated with the HHX family and mean that each individual cymbal can have its own visual character.
Note on Brilliant-Finish Cymbals
Brilliant-finish cymbals are polished and buffed to achieve their reflective appearance. As a result, fingerprints, light handling marks, polishing swirls, finish variation and minor factory handling evidence may be visible under direct lighting or close inspection.
These cosmetic characteristics are common on brilliant-finish cymbals and do not affect performance, structural integrity or sound quality.
