NDG Unplayed Condition

At Nick's Drum Gear, unplayed means the cymbal has never been owned or played by an end user. Many of our cymbals originate from factory cymbal packs, giving them a known history from day one.

Because they do not include a manufacturer's warranty, they are represented as unplayed rather than new.

These cymbals have been carefully handled, inspected and stored. They show no stick marks, keyholing or edge wear.

20" HHX Evolution Ride

Developed with Dave Weckl, the Evolution Ride balances warmth, clarity and sensitivity. It provides refined stick definition over a smooth musical wash and opens easily when crashed.

Sound Profile

  • Stick Definition: Crisp and articulate with clear separation
  • Tone: Warm, dark foundation with a bright, polished top end
  • Wash: Controlled and musical without overpowering
  • Crashability: Excellent; opens quickly and blends smoothly
  • Dynamics: Highly responsive and activates with a light touch

This is a ride that rewards touch rather than requiring volume to come alive.

14" HHX Evolution Hi-Hats

The Evolution Hi-Hats are voiced for clarity, speed and control. The medium top paired with the heavy bottom produces a crisp, articulate chick with excellent stick definition and separation.

Sound Profile

  • Stick Definition: Clear, glassy articulation
  • Foot Chick: Tight, authoritative and precise
  • Tone: Dark HHX body with shimmering high-end clarity
  • Response: Extremely touch-sensitive
  • Control: Excellent separation through fast or dense passages

Together, the hats and ride create a particularly cohesive setup for players who prioritize articulation, dynamics and tonal balance.

STR Rating — Style, Tonality & Response

Jazz / Fusion: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Exceptional articulation, sensitivity and dynamic expression.

Studio / Session: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Controlled wash, clean separation and a broad dynamic range make this combination especially recording-friendly.

Pop / Worship: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Musical warmth and polished clarity without overwhelming the mix.

Rock: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Excellent for controlled and dynamic rock applications where articulation matters more than sheer volume.

Nick’s Notes

This pairing captures what the HHX Evolution series does particularly well. The 14" hats are fast, precise and controlled, while the 20" ride provides articulation and a musical wash without becoming intrusive.

For a player who already has crashes they like—or wants to choose crashes separately—this provides the core hats-and-ride foundation of an HHX Evolution setup without requiring the purchase of another complete cymbal pack.

Both models emphasize touch, articulation and control rather than raw volume. They're especially well suited to fusion, jazz, pop, worship, studio/session work and modern live applications.

Note on HHX Hammering

SABIAN HHX cymbals feature extensive hammering as part of their manufacturing and voicing process. Visible hammer impressions, surface irregularities and variations in the bronze are intentional characteristics of the cymbals and are not dents or evidence of previous playing.

These variations contribute to the complex tonal character associated with the HHX family and mean that each individual cymbal can have its own visual character.

Note on Brilliant-Finish Cymbals

Brilliant-finish cymbals are polished and buffed to achieve their reflective appearance. As a result, fingerprints, light handling marks, polishing swirls, finish variation and minor factory handling evidence may be visible under direct lighting or close inspection.

These cosmetic characteristics are common on brilliant-finish cymbals and do not affect performance, structural integrity or sound quality.
