The CJ35 is Collings’ vintage-inspired interpretation of the classic mahogany slope-shoulder design. Compared with the standard CJ, the CJ35 uses Honduran mahogany back and sides, a shorter 24 7/8" scale, a Wenge fingerboard and straight bridge, and non-scalloped X-bracing with three tone bars. Those construction choices give the model its distinctive voice—strong fundamental notes, controlled bass, excellent note separation, and a dry, direct response that works particularly well for rhythm playing, flatpicking, blues, Americana, country, and singer-songwriter accompaniment.

The shorter scale gives the guitar a slightly softer feel under the fingers while retaining plenty of power and projection. The mahogany body keeps the low end focused rather than overly boomy, making the CJ35 exceptionally responsive to changes in pick attack and right-hand dynamics.
