The YDP-S36: Bringing Authentic Piano Expression Home
The Yamaha YDP-S36 is a digital piano from the ARIUS Series, designed to bring over a century of Yamaha's acoustic piano heritage into the home. Built for beginning players and those returning to playing after a break, it focuses on authentic touch response and true piano expression. Its slim, stylish profile is made to blend seamlessly into everyday living spaces, while smart device connectivity, recording functions, and expressive voices make daily practice more fun and effective. The result is an instrument meant to feel less like a practice tool and more like a lifelong musical partner.

Playability
The YDP-S36 features a Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard with 88 weighted keys and matte black keytops, delivering a natural feel across every register—from rich, heavy bass to sparkling, bright treble. This graded touch helps the instrument respond to playing exactly as intended, a key factor in expressive piano performance. The piano also includes three pedals: damper, soft, and sostenuto. The damper pedal offers a half-pedaling feature, letting players control pedal depth to sustain sound for as long or as short as desired, enabling more intricate and nuanced performances.
Sound
At the heart of the YDP-S36's sound is a Voice sampled from Yamaha's flagship CFX concert grand piano, offering richly colorful tone and expressiveness across all registers. This is paired with an 8W × 2 stereo amplifier and 12cm speakers featuring a new diffuser grille, which keeps treble notes clear even at a distance and creates a well-balanced sound field for players and listeners alike. The piano also includes Virtual Resonance Modeling Lite (VRM Lite), which simulates the complex resonance of a grand piano's strings, allowing keys and pedals to be played together for a wider variety of tonal expression.
Design & Digital Features
The YDP-S36 has a slim, compact body that appears flat when the keyboard lid is closed, blending easily into apartments, living rooms, and other home spaces, with a full lineup of colors to match any interior. On the digital side, it offers 10 built-in Voices—including piano, electric piano, and strings—along with 353 preset songs, a metronome, and recording functions. Automatic volume control makes headphone practice easier on the ears. Bluetooth connectivity allows the piano to double as a speaker or sync with the free Smart Pianist app, which provides simplified controls, sheet music for all preset songs, and the ability to record and save performances.
Why We Love This
Our gear experts appreciate the YDP-S36 for its authentic touch and tone—GHS weighted keys respond naturally across every register, while the CFX-sampled grand piano Voice and VRM Lite resonance modeling deliver expressive, nuanced sound. Half-pedaling on the damper pedal allows subtle control rarely found at this size. Its slim design fits real homes, and features like headphone practice, 353 songs, and Smart Pianist app connectivity make daily practice both convenient and genuinely enjoyable for beginners and returning players alike.
