To simplify this story, this guitar started out as a relic at the custom shop and was switched to a NOS Strat. Meaning that the finish blemishes which are minimal, are from owner slight use in past 12 years.

Up for sale is a stunning, beautifully preserved 2014 Fender Custom Shop 1960 Stratocaster NOS in a classic 3-Color Sunburst finish. Please note: While the serial number features an "R" prefix (traditionally used for Relic plates), a deep-dive inspection of the neck pocket and neck heel reveals this is a factory-original NOS (New Old Stock) model. The pickup cavity is stamped "60 NOS" from the factory, and the neck heel features the crossed-out factory Relic stamp overridden with a prominent red "NOS" stamp. Furthermore, the neck heel carries the highly coveted "YAMANO" stamp, confirming this instrument was originally selected and exported via Yamano Music in Japan—legendary for enforcing the absolute highest standards for wood grain selection, weight, and build quality from the Fender Custom Shop.

Condition & Playability:
The guitar plays beautifully and is in excellent physical condition. Most importantly, the neck and frets are in "like new" condition. The dark, rich Slab Rosewood fingerboard shows no signs of finger indentations or wear, and the vintage-accurate frets retain 100% of their factory height and crown with zero pitting, flat spots, or string grooving. The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish on the body is incredibly vibrant and glossy, acting like a mirror with only minor handling marks as expected on a black/sunburst nitro finish.

Specifications:

  • Serial Number: R-80455
  • Build Date: December 1, 2014 (Stamped on Neck Heel)
  • Body Wood: Select Alder
  • Finish: 3-Color Sunburst (Thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer)
  • Fingerboard: Slab Rosewood with vintage-correct Clay Dots
  • Pickguard: 3-Ply Mint Green with full-size aluminum shielding plate
  • Electronics: Custom Shop 1960 Single-Coil pickups, CTS Pots, period-accurate cloth push-back wiring, and red chiclet capacitor.

Core Specifications & Markings Breakdown:

  • Model Type (NOS): The pickup cavity stamp clearly reads 60 NOS. The "NOS" classification means the Custom Shop built this guitar to period-correct 1960 specifications, but finished it as a "brand new" guitar would look in 1960. It features a high-gloss, pristine, un-aged nitrocellulose lacquer finish with zero factory-distressed finish checking or wear.
  • The "RELIC" Neck Stamps: You will notice the neck heel features a crossed-out "RELIC" stamp alongside a prominent "NOS" red ink stamp. It is very common for the Custom Shop to utilize a neck blank originally stamped for a Relic run, override it at quality control, and stamp it as an NOS to match the order requirements.
  • Yamano Connection: The neck heel is stamped YAMANO. This indicates the guitar was originally ordered by or exported through Yamano Music in Japan, Fender's legendary premium distributor known for demanding the absolute highest wood-grain and build-quality standards from the Custom Shop.
  • Production Date: The neck heel shows a date stamp of DEC 01 2014, and the hand-written neck pocket date says Ene 13 (January 2013/2014 transition cycle), confirming a late 2014 build era.
  • Part Numbers: The factory production number 11428490-4 is stamped consistently on both the neck heel and inside the pickup routes, proving that the neck and body are factory-matched components.

Neck & Fret Specs:

Because it is an authentic 1960 reissue, it sports a Slab Rosewood fingerboard glued flat to the maple neck (a hallmark of mid-1959 to mid-1962 Strats) rather than a curved veneer fingerboard. True to your observation that it is "like new," the fretboard wood is dark and richly grained, showing no string grooving or divots, and the frets retain their full factory height and crown.

Electronics & Hardware

  • Pickups: True vintage-style single coils with black bobbins and cloth push-back wiring.
  • Potentiometers: High-grade CTS pots stamped with a vintage-accurate Fender part number (013446) paired with a period-correct red "Chicklet" style capacitor.
  • Shielding: The pickguard features a full-size aluminum shielding plate underneath, exactly as Fender constructed them in 1960 to reduce single-coil hum.

Fret & Fingerboard Health:

Looking down the fingerboard, the frets show absolutely zero wear, flattening, or pitting. The crown profile is pristine. Additionally, the rosewood slab board shows a beautiful, straight grain structure with zero finger-oil staining or nail scratches, supporting the "like new" evaluation.

  • Clay-Style Dot Inlays: The face dots are vintage-accurate, aged "clay" style markers. These are period-correct replicas of what Fender used in 1960, designed to look slightly darker than modern stark-white plastic or pearloid dots.
  • Mint Green Pickguard: The pickguard has the subtle, classic 3-ply Mint Green/Black/Mint Green tint that accurately mimics how original 1960 celluloid nitrate guards naturally aged over time.
  • 3-Color Sunburst Finish: The finish is an incredibly vibrant, glossy 3-Color Sunburst (Yellow to Red to Black). Because this is an NOS (New Old Stock) model rather than a Relic, the surface acts like a perfect mirror. There are no intentionally smashed edges, fake buckle rash, or artificially induced finish checking.

Visit our new secured still under construction website to see the long list of celebrity musicians and groups we have met and serviced in the past 40 years.

NOTE: Too cool. Late last summer we shipped a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!

We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
