Vintage c.1972 Ovation Breadwinner 1251 White Modified DiMarzio/Epiphone Pickups w/ Original Case

A very cool player's example of one of Ovation's most distinctive vintage solidbody electric guitars.

This USA-made Ovation Breadwinner Model 1251 carries the very low serial number 1003 and appears to be an early-production example dating to approximately 1972. The Breadwinner debuted in the early 1970s and was notable for its radical ergonomic body shape, unusual pickups and active onboard electronics.

The original electronics in this guitar developed a failed preamp and have been professionally replaced with a conventional passive pickup/electronics configuration.

The bridge position now features a DiMarzio Virtual PAF humbucker, while the neck position features an Epiphone USA ProBucker humbucker. Because the factory Ovation pickups were considerably larger than conventional humbuckers, black pickup mounting rings were professionally fitted to properly mount the replacement pickups.

The guitar has also been upgraded with locking tuners.

These modifications make this Breadwinner substantially different from an all-original collector example, but they result in a much more conventional and easily serviceable electronics setup while retaining the unique feel, construction and unmistakable appearance of the vintage Ovation Breadwinner.

Modifications:

The factory pickups and active electronics are no longer installed. The original preamp had failed, and the electronics were professionally converted to a passive humbucker configuration.

The bridge pickup is a DiMarzio Virtual PAF and the neck pickup is an Epiphone USA ProBucker. Pickup mounting rings were professionally installed to accommodate the standard-size replacement humbuckers in the larger original pickup openings.

The original tuners have also been replaced with locking tuners. Previous tuner mounting holes remain visible on the rear of the headstock.

Condition:

Good vintage condition with noticeable cosmetic wear consistent with its age and use.

The textured white finish shows various small dings, chips, scratches and finish wear. Several areas of finish loss are visible around the body edges and back, including larger chips shown clearly in the photos.

The pickup covers show substantial cosmetic wear and scratching. The replacement pickguard, pickup rings and electronics installation present cleanly overall.

Previous tuner mounting holes are visible on the back of the headstock following installation of the locking tuners.

Please examine all photos closely for the exact cosmetic condition and modifications.

The guitar has been tested and is functioning as intended.

This is best considered a player's vintage Breadwinner rather than an all-original collector example. It retains the unusual Ovation design, USA construction and original case while offering a professionally installed, conventional passive humbucker setup that is much easier to service.
