I'm offering the Edwards E-ALEXI SCYTHE, a signed model by Alexi Laiho - guitarist and frontman of Children of Bodom, one of the most distinctive guitarists of contemporary metal.
Scythe is one of the most recognizable versions of his instrument - a white body with black pinstriping, asymmetrical V shape, single pickup at the bridge, Floyd Rose, and characteristic inlays on the ebony fretboard.
This is not just a guitar styled after Alexi's instrument. The construction and electronics directly reference the solutions used in his Japanese ESP models - neck-through-body, alder body, 3-piece maple neck, ebony fretboard, single EMG FH-2, and MM-04 booster. The current specification of the E-ALEXI SCYTHE is also confirmed by ESP Japan.
EMG FH-2 + MM-04
One of the most important elements of this model is the EMG FH-2 + ESP MM-04 circuit.
The EMG FH-2 works here with a dedicated MM-04 booster, which was developed specifically for Alexi Laiho's instruments. ESP describes it as one of the key elements that build his characteristic, sharp, and aggressive sound.
The MM-04 is not just a regular boost switch:
- it increases the signal level by approximately +4.5 dB to +18 dB
- the boost level can be set with an internal trimmer
- internal DIP switches allow changing the character of the high-end range
- an external mini-switch at the potentiometer allows instant activation or deactivation of the booster
In Alexi's guitars, the MM-04 was an integral part of the entire tone circuit - during tours, his boost was set to be practically always active.
This circuit is what distinguishes the more faithful Japanese Edwards models from many simpler signature versions, which have a single pickup but not the entire booster circuit.
Construction
The guitar has a neck-through-body, meaning the neck passes through the body. In combination with the 25.5-inch scale and thin Thin U profile, this provides a construction typical of guitars designed for fast, precise playing.
The ebony fretboard has white binding and 24 frets. The characteristic Scythe inlays directly reference one of Alexi's most famous guitars.
The full locking system - Locknut R2 and Floyd Rose FRT-1000, complemented by GOTOH SG360-07 tuners - ensures tuning stability.
