The Ibanez GIO GRG121SP-BMC Blue Metal Chameleon is a budget-friendly RG-style solid-body electric guitar designed around the fast, streamlined feel Ibanez is known for. It combines a striking color-shifting finish with a pair of humbuckers and a fixed bridge, making it particularly well suited to rock and heavier styles.
- Body: Poplar, with the familiar double-cutaway RG/GIO shape. The Blue Metal Chameleon finish shifts between blue, green and violet tones depending on the light and viewing angle, with a matching headstock.
- Neck: Roasted maple GRG neck with a 25.5-inch scale length. The roasted maple construction gives it the sleek appearance and feel associated with Ibanez's faster-playing designs.
- Fingerboard: Jatoba with white-dot inlays and 24 medium frets. Its 400 mm (15.7-inch) radius is relatively flat, which suits lead playing, bends and fast riffs.
- Pickups: Two Ibanez Classic Elite passive ceramic humbuckers, one at the neck and one at the bridge. They're intended to provide a full, punchy sound with plenty of low-end, particularly appropriate for rock and metal.
- Controls: Master volume, master tone and a 5-way pickup selector. The switching provides more tonal combinations than a conventional 3-way HH setup.
- Bridge: Ibanez F106 fixed bridge. Because it doesn't have a tremolo system, it's straightforward to adjust and generally convenient for alternate tunings and stable intonation.
- Hardware: Chrome, including Ibanez's mono-unit output jack, which is designed to resist loosening with repeated use.
What it feels and sounds like
This is essentially a fast-playing, modern rock guitar. The combination of a relatively flat fingerboard, 24 frets and Ibanez's GRG neck makes it particularly comfortable for lead lines, riffs and higher-register playing. The two humbuckers give it substantially more thickness and output than a typical single-coil-equipped beginner guitar.
The fixed F106 bridge is also a practical choice: unlike an Ibanez with a floating tremolo, you don't have to deal with balancing springs and bridge position when changing strings or tunings.
