Late-1990s Korean Epiphones, particularly Peerless production, have developed a following among buyers.

Beautiful 1999 Epiphone John Lennon EJ-160E acoustic/electric guitar in mint condition.

This is an early Korean-made example of Epiphone’s recreation of the Gibson J-160E forever associated with John Lennon and The Beatles. It features the classic vintage sunburst finish, John Lennon signature on the upper bout, trapezoid fingerboard inlays, magnetic neck pickup, and separate volume and tone controls.

This guitar has been exceptionally well cared for and is in remarkable condition for a guitar manufactured in 1999.

Recent professional setup and upgrades

The guitar was recently professionally set up by the luthier at Willie’s American Guitars in St. Paul, Minnesota, a highly regarded vintage and specialty guitar shop.

As part of the setup, it received:

• Fossilized walrus ivory nut
• Fossilized walrus ivory saddle
• Premium unslotted bridge pins
• Upgraded strap buttons
• Pyramid flatwound electric-guitar strings

The Pyramid flatwounds are an especially nice match for the EJ-160E’s magnetic pickup and give the guitar a wonderfully appropriate vintage character when amplified.

All of the original factory components are included with the sale, including the original nut, saddle, bridge pins and strap buttons. Therefore, the guitar can be returned to its original configuration if desired—an important consideration for collectors.

Condition: I would describe the guitar as Mint.

The vintage sunburst finish remains beautiful and glossy, and the back, sides, neck and top have been exceptionally well preserved. Please examine the photographs, which are of the actual guitar being offered.

It plays beautifully following the recent professional setup, and the electronics function as they should.

Why this one is special

There are plenty of later EJ-160Es on the used market, but finding a 1999 Korean example in this condition is becoming increasingly difficult.

The combination of its early Korean manufacture, mint condition, Lennon appointments, professional Willie’s setup and carefully selected upgrades makes this an unusually nice example for either a Beatles/Lennon enthusiast or a player looking for the distinctive J-160E sound.

Because all original components are included, you get the benefit of the upgraded setup without sacrificing the ability to restore the instrument to its original configuration.
