The "Zelkova Snare Drum" is the flagship model that defines CANOPUS.

The HS-1465 features a 14" x 6.5" solid-block shell carved from a single piece of Zelkova wood. With a shell thickness of 14mm, it incorporates brass lugs, 8-tension die-cast hoops, and Vintage Snare Wires (CPSL-ZL14NP).

It is characterized by the rich shell resonance and thick, solid sound unique to a carved solid-wood shell. It offers a fast attack and excellent projection. Furthermore, it boasts a wide tuning range, accommodating various playing styles—from delicate touches to powerful, aggressive playing.

A Globally Rare "Carved Solid-Wood Shell"

Most standard drum shells utilize a ply construction, created by gluing together multiple layers of wood. In contrast, the Zelkova snare employs a highly specialized construction method: the shell is carved out of a single log of Zelkova wood.

While a carved solid-wood shell allows the wood's natural resonance to shine, it carries risks such as warping or cracking over time, and its manufacture requires advanced craftsmanship.

CANOPUS pursues manufacturing techniques that harness the unique qualities of these carved shells while ensuring the instrument remains stable and reliable.

Zelkova's Unique Bearing Edge

During the development of the Zelkova snare, the team looked beyond standard 45-degree edges, experimenting with various angles and shapes to find the perfect match for the shell.

The result was a unique edge profile that balances shell resonance, delicate response, tonal thickness, and rapid attack.

The insights gained during this development process have gone on to influence the design philosophy for subsequent CANOPUS drums and accessories.

Design Without Air Vents

The Zelkova Snare Drum does not feature the air vent hardware commonly found on standard snare drums.

The carved Zelkova shell naturally expands and contracts in response to changes in temperature and humidity. At CANOPUS, we deliberately designed this drum without air vent hardware to avoid hindering the wood's natural movement or placing unnecessary stress on the shell.

The interior of the vent hole features an oil finish, allowing you to clearly observe the solid-wood shell's construction.

Rotary Height-Adjustable Lugs

Because wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, the positional relationship between the lugs and tension bolts requires careful consideration in solid, carved-wood shells.

To accommodate these changes unique to wooden shells, the HS-1465 employs a mechanism that allows the lug's center post to rotate, thereby adjusting its height.

With a height adjustment range of ±2mm, the tension bolt's mounting position can be precisely fine-tuned to match the shell's condition.

Vintage Snare Wire

The "CPSL-ZL14NP" Vintage Snare Wire was selected specifically to unlock the full potential of the Zelkova snare.

It responds beautifully to delicate *pianissimo* playing, making it easy to express subtle nuances.

Die-Cast Hoop

An 8-tension die-cast hoop is employed.

Designed to emphasize sound clarity and projection, it enhances the snare's inherently thick and well-defined sonic character.

Bolt Tight

"Bolt Tight" is a leather washer designed to smooth bolt movement and prevent loosening.

This accessory suppresses unwanted vibrations and overtones around the tension bolts, resulting in a more cohesive, thick sound.

Strainer Switch CSA20S

The CSA20S strainer switch is utilized.

The tension adjustment dial incorporates a nylon nut; this provides just the right amount of resistance to prevent the snare wires from loosening during performance. (Specifications)
