BUILD & DESIGN
The GDSM 202 is one of Grundig's wonderfully microphone designs.using a two individual mono dynamic capsules within its distinctive dual-sided head assembly.
For this version, the microphone is configured as a single-capsule mono microphone and adapted for straightforward modern studio use.
The conversion terminates in a standard 3-pin XLR connector, while the custom mounting arrangement makes the unusually shaped Grundig body considerably easier to position than in its original configuration.
SOUND CHARACTERISTICS
The GDSM 202 originally belonged to the world of Grundig tape recorders and domestic recording equipment, and in mono form it becomes a surprisingly serious studio secret weapon.
It is particularly good on electric guitar amplifiers and cabinets: aggressive, tight and focused, with pronounced midrange character and a naturally controlled low end. The upper range remains present without trying to deliver the extended, polished response of a modern condenser microphone.
In application, it occupies some of the territory for which microphones such as the Shure SM57 became studio standards, but with its own distinctly vintage German character and a somewhat rawer presentation.
This is exactly the sort of microphone that can make sense when a technically “better” microphone simply sounds too polite.
WHERE IT SHINES
The GDSM 202 Mono is particularly useful when a source needs focus, bite and character rather than neutrality. Its compact head also makes close placement around amplifiers and drums particularly convenient.
Excellent applications include guitar cabinets, bass cabinets, snare and toms, reamping and speaker capture, percussion, experimental recording, and adding a contrasting vintage layer alongside a cleaner primary microphone.
The Desert Island Kit takes that character and packages it into a microphone that can simply be taken out of its case, mounted, plugged into XLR and put to work.
