MOMOSE Custom Craft Guitars is a brand of traditional electric guitars and basses named after “Yasuo Momose,” a senior master builder at the Asuka Factory in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture.

It is no exaggeration to say that this brand—which has long been a byword for high-quality Japanese-made guitars—continues to enjoy enduring popularity. Each instrument is meticulously crafted by hand by skilled artisans, who consistently pursue the “ideal musical instrument” from the selection of wood through processing to the final finish.

Today, we’re introducing the “MJ・Five1/R” from the “momose” Original Series, which has been reborn following a 2026 redesign.

In this redesign, while preserving the fundamental design cultivated over the years, the specifications have been revised with a focus on the parts that players actually interact with.

The following points, in particular, represent major changes.

Newly Developed “Gravitas-J” Pickup

Equipped with the “Gravitas-J,” a momose original pickup adopted starting in 2026.

By readjusting the height of the pole pieces and optimizing the output balance for each string, the sound has evolved to deliver a richer, denser tone across the low to mid-range frequencies, while retaining the clear definition characteristic of traditional momose guitars.

It responds sensitively to variations in picking intensity, faithfully translating the player’s touch into sound—from delicate phrases to powerful playing styles.

It also features the “Turbo Switch,” which is activated by pulling up the tone knob.

Normally, it operates in the orthodox JB style with two volume controls (front and rear) plus a tone control, but when the Turbo Switch is turned on, the two pickups are connected in series. This creates a thick, powerful sound that’s a cut above the standard passive JB.

This sound is a perfect match for players who love vintage-style passive tones but want a bit more modern punch.

The tuners are GOTOH GBU-510C-12.

These high-precision GOTOH tuners ensure stable tuning.

They also contribute to a lighter weight compared to previous models. Every detail has been updated with today’s performance environment in mind.

Starting with the 2026 model, the fretboard sides feature the glow-in-the-dark material “Luminlay.”

This makes it easier to see your finger positions even on dimly lit stages, enhancing practicality during live performances.

This is a practical update that not only adds a visual accent but also improves visibility while playing.

The electronics have also been updated to the 2026 specifications. The jack uses Puretone to securely hold the plug in place. Additionally, the tone circuit incorporates Centralab oil capacitors.

Characterized by its responsiveness to the player’s nuances and a bright, forward-projecting tone, this is a key element supporting the new sound of the 2026 momose model.

A JB that has been thoroughly modernized while preserving tradition.

Based on the meticulous craftsmanship unique to Japanese handmade instruments—a legacy momose has cultivated over many years—and a traditional sound, this guitar is a ready-to-play instrument that adds the “playability,” “rich tone,” and “practicality” sought by today’s players.

Please give it a try.
