Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a rare and seldom seen older general purpose microphone made by Electro Voice for a very short time during the 1940's. This microphone closely resembles the more common 630 model and this 612 model comes with the American Microphone Company DD model desk stand shown.
This mic has been tested and while the original omni-directional element still works...it's very weak and cannot be used for any purpose other than display or repair.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in a 1940's Electro Voice catalog along with several others mic models of that era.
This 612 model mic came in the polished chrome finish. I have only ever personally seen about a half dozen of these 612 mics before. I believe they were only sold for a couple years as I have never seen them listed in any other E.V catalog except the one I have from 1946. I'm not sure why E.V stopped selling them but the front grill is quite different from the style of the 630 model. Interestingly enough the E.V 605 embraced the same front grill that was discontinued.
The 80 + year old microphone has typical wear as you can see in pictures with scratches, chrome loss and scuff marks but free of any dents, dings or fractures. The threads for the stand are perfect with zero stripping but there is a small piece of threading missing where the cable attaches too. The E.V label shows lite paint loss exposing the brass material beneath but still completely legible. Overall this piece is an easy 5 + on a scale of 1 - 10.
The joint mechanism works fine with plenty of tension. The on / off switch works great as well. Just needs a replacement element to operate. This is a really unique mic and will be a great conversation piece anywhere it's displayed.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...
The mic comes with the American Microphone Company DD model desk stand that makes for a very stable platform and it's period to the microphone being a late 1940's piece.
You'll see this model as well as a few others in Pic # 2
You'll notice that it has an interesting gold tone to it. It's an all metal design with a heavier deco influence and still has the 3 original rubber pads on the bottom.
This stand was made for a short time. Perhaps 5 to 10 years.
Dimensions with mic on top of the stand are appx 10 inches tall x 4 inches wide and it has the same overall wear as the mic.
I'd rate it a true 5 + on a scale of 1 -10.
