The BB Series is Yamaha’s flagship electric bass line, proudly representing one of Japan’s most renowned global brands. Loved by musicians around the world for decades, this series is celebrated for its proprietary design and exceptionally thick, powerful PJ sound. Today, the BB Series has become so iconic that it is often considered the definitive PJ bass.

This particular instrument is Made in Japan, and its quality speaks for itself. While it features a classic alder body, Yamaha goes beyond simply using alder. By laminating maple between layers of alder to create a three-ply construction, the bass achieves a richer midrange and faster response. In addition, Yamaha’s proprietary I.R.A. (Initial Response Acceleration) treatment is applied. After assembly, the instrument is subjected to controlled vibrations, allowing it to resonate as if it has been played for years—even though it is brand new. This treatment enhances the instrument’s overall cohesion, resulting in a deeper, more expressive tone.

Yamaha’s innovative engineering extends to other areas as well. In addition to four screws that vertically secure the neck from the back of the body, the Miter Bolting system fastens the neck end at a 45-degree angle, creating a tight neck-to-body joint and producing even stronger resonance. The string-through-body system also features a 45-degree angle rather than a straight-through design, efficiently transferring string vibrations across the entire instrument. These meticulous details reflect Yamaha’s careful attention to craftsmanship.

The signature PJ pickup layout of the BB Series features original Yamaha pickups with powerful Alnico V magnets, delivering a thick low-end core and punchy mids that define the classic PJ sound. Each pickup excels individually as well as in combination, offering a wide range of tonal possibilities—an indicator of a truly versatile, high-quality instrument.

Packed with the precision, thoughtful design, and refined craftsmanship that Japanese manufacturing is known for, the BB Series has captivated countless musicians. It remains a highly sought-after model among players both in Japan and worldwide.
