Here we have an almost 50 year old original Morley Power Wah PWB in near mint condition. In fact, except for the aging marks on the bottom plate of the pedal, it is mint.

The Morley Power Wah PWB is a highly regarded, classic electro-optical wah pedal originally produced during the 1970s Tel-Ray electronics era. It is widely celebrated for replacing traditional mechanical potentiometers with a smooth, noise-free optical design that eliminates scratchy pots.

This is the Vintage 1970s "Big Box" Era model: Manufactured by Tel-Ray Electronics in Burbank, California, these legacy models feature massive, heavy-duty chrome steel chassis. They rely on an internal light bulb, a physical shutter attached to the treadle, and a light-dependent resistor (LDR) to alter the tone. Vintage units are usually easily identifiable by their permanently attached AC power cords.

The most famous musician associated with the vintage 1970s Morley PWB (Power Wah Boost) pedal is the late Cliff Burton, the legendary original bassist for Metallica.

Burton famously used the chrome-chassis Tel-Ray era PWB to create his signature, aggressive bass solos. He used the pedal's massive sweeping filter alongside heavy distortion to achieve a guitar-like lead tone, defining classic tracks like "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls". The pedal is so synonymous with his sound that Morley has issued dedicated tribute and signature versions in collaboration with his estate. Beyond Cliff Burton, several other high-profile musicians have utilized the Morley Power Wah Boost or very close variations from that vintage era: Jason Newsted (Metallica): When Newsted took over bass duties for Metallica after Burton's passing, he also integrated the heavy-duty Morley PWB into his live rig to maintain the band's thunderous low-end textures. Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead): Known for experimenting with diverse envelope filters and optical wahs, Garcia utilized vintage Morley Power Wah units during the 1970s to shape his fluid, expressive guitar solos. Geddy Lee (Rush): Known for pushing the limits of bass tone, Lee experimented with the expansive sweeping range of early AC-powered Morley wah pedals in the studio during Rush's progressive rock heyday. The PWB was uniquely favored by bass players because, unlike traditional Cry Baby pedals of the era, the early Morley optical circuitry didn't cut out the instrument's low frequencies. It also featured a massive built-in +40dB boost that could easily drive an amplifier into heavy saturation.

Technical Features & Tonal Profile

  • Massive Sweep: Delivers an expansive frequency sweep ranging from 25Hz to 4500Hz. This provides an intensely fluid and expressive vocal quality.
  • Multi-Instrument Versatility: Functions exceptionally well with both electric guitars and bass guitars. It is highly prized by bassists looking to capture Cliff Burton's thunderous, aggressive rock tone.
  • Integrated Boost & Level Controls: Reissue versions feature an integrated wah level knob, acting as a clean boost (up to 20dB on select models) to make solos punch directly through a live band mix.
  • Indestructible Build: Built like a tank out of heavy, cold-rolled steel to survive relentless stage use.
  • Tested by our technicians, works very well.
  • Cosmetically: This unit is mint except for normal wear on the bottom plate.

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently this summer a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!

We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
