An extremely rare Stratocaster model from the popular “American Original” series. The “Aztec Gold” was produced for only two years (2018 to 2020) and is consequently hard to find on the secondhand market.

Its historical inspiration is the very first gold Fender Stratocaster from 1954—a custom-made instrument for Eldon Shamblin (Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys). Leo Fender personally presented this guitar to him at the time. In music history, this guitar is considered the “original mother” of all gold Stratocaster models. However, the official color name at the time was not “Aztec Gold.”

In Fender’s first official Custom Color Charts (starting in 1960), the only gold shade listed was “Shoreline Gold” (based on a Pontiac car color), which was, however, significantly more subdued and matte.

The color “Aztec Gold” did not officially appear in the Fender catalog until 1983; it is significantly brighter, more yellowish, and has a deeper metallic sheen than the old “Shoreline Gold.”

With this American Original 50’s Strat, Fender has thus created a “what-if” scenario: the exact specifications of the rare 1950s “Custom Order” guitars (such as Eldon Shamblin’s) combined with the more modern, richer, and more beautiful “Aztec Gold” finish (nitrocellulose lacquer). In addition, the fretboard radius has been increased from 7.25“ to 9.5”, adapting it to the playing needs of today’s musicians.
