The Martin Custom Shop, located within the current Martin factory, produces exceptional guitars with outstanding skill and extensive experience. It operates in a completely different environment and process from the regular line. A dedicated area within the factory maintains traditional methods while achieving even higher precision. This is a top-class division that produces the Authentic series, considered the pinnacle of the lineup, as well as custom models boasting a high level of perfection. This particular instrument is a custom D-28, the "CTM D-28 Adirondack Spruce Australian Blackwood," a used item from 2014. This guitar features an Adirondack spruce top, Australian blackwood sides and back, a genuine mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, pearl dot fingerboard inlays, herringbone trim, ivoroid binding, zigzag backstrip, Grover open-back butt bumblebee gold tuners, tortoiseshell pickguard, 2-way adjustable truss rod, and rear-shifted scalloped X-bracing. The sides and back utilize wood with a prominent, shimmering grain pattern, evoking a fantastical beauty reminiscent of waves lapping against the water's surface. Australian blackwood is a type of acacia wood, similar in grain and specific gravity to koa. Compared to koa, it has a slightly higher mid-low frequency peak. Compared to rosewood, it offers a brighter, more lively sound. The Adirondack spruce top also has a distinctive low-frequency range, resulting in a rich tone and a powerful, resonant sound. The rear-shifted bracing keeps the sound from becoming too unruly, resulting in a well-defined tone. It possesses a rich, full sound while maintaining a bright and brilliant tone. As expected from a Custom Shop instrument, it has a fresh, finely detailed resonance and a wealth of sonic information, offering a wide range of tonal expression. Its solid resonance makes it easy to use in any genre. There are signs of peeling and repair on the body binding in four places on the waist and on the shoulder, but the repairs are so clean that the slight unevenness is barely noticeable to the touch. This is unavoidable with modern ivoroid binding. Other than that, there are very faint dents around the volute top and the 10-12 fret area on the back of the neck that are barely noticeable to the touch, slight tarnishing on the gold tuners, and very faint scuff marks on the body paint surface, but overall it is an instrument with very little signs of use. The neck condition is good, the saddle height is sufficient, and there is plenty of fret life left, making this Custom D-28 a guitar that can be used for many years to come. The Custom Shop boasts a level of precision and quality that is far superior to the regular line. This is a custom model using materials rarely seen in Martin guitars. Experience its unique and distinctive sound.
