Up for consideration is a rare, exceptionally well-preserved 1974 Gibson Byrdland finished in stunning and elusive factory Wine Red. Designed originally in collaboration with master guitarists Billy Byrd and Hank Garland, the Byrdland represents the pinnacle of Kalamazoo archtop craftsmanship, combining Gibson's premier carved solid spruce top construction with a thinline profile and an ultra-fast, short 23.5-inch scale.

This example is in very good vintage condition, exhibiting beautiful deep red hue and brilliant gold hardware. The finish shows subtle, honest character, including some light checking along the f-hole edges and around sections of the multi-ply binding. Typical for Gibson celluloid of this era, the pickguard shows light off-gassing along the edge adjacent to the pickups, but remains remarkably solid and stable compared to most original guards found today. The switch-tip grommet/washer displays light age cracking as well.

The guitar plays like an absolute dream thanks to a high-end, professional refret using period-correct fretwire and a meticulously cut new bone nut. The carve is fast, slim, and effortless in the hand. Combined with the shorter scale length, complex chord voicings and rapid lead runs feel virtually weightless under your fingers. At just 6.93 pounds, this Byrdland is delightfully lightweight, balanced, and vibrant.

Acoustically, the carved solid spruce top and maple back and sides produce an airy, immediate, and warm resonance. Plugged in, the original Gibson humbuckers deliver the definitive high-end archtop voice. The neck pickup offers a lush, velvety, three-dimensional warmth with round lows and pristine articulation across every note. The bridge pickup adds a woody, snappy bite with singing sustain and sweet harmonic overtones that never sound brittle.

Complete with its original Gibson hardshell case.
