The Martin D-35: A Folk Guitar Legend!
The D-35 is a model that debuted during the American folk song boom of the 1960s. While the D-28 is known for its powerful sound suited for band ensembles, the D-35?with its thinner bracing?is characterized by a tone that complements the vocals. Visually, its three-piece back is striking, but this design was actually intended to conserve the Brazilian rosewood used for the sides and back at the time.
This particular instrument was made in 1977. While some D-35s from that year were equipped with Schaller tuners, this one still features Grover tuners. It comes with a blue case and, although not original, features a black pickguard. It exudes the classic charm of a 1970s Martin.
There are repair marks from a Martin crack (with a crack stopper in place), and as mentioned above, the pickguard has been replaced. At the same time, the top was extensively over-lacquered, and the pickguard has been painted in to match the original. The lacquer finish around the pickguard is not smooth?possibly due to the pickguard replacement.Dents, scratches, and picking marks are visible throughout, but none are particularly prominent, and some are hidden beneath the aforementioned over-lacquered finish. While the satin finish on the neck has developed a slight sheen and the plating on the metal hardware has become slightly dull, the guitar is generally in good condition considering its age. Although instruments from this era typically had a higher factory string action, the saddle has been filed down to provide a relatively comfortable playing setup.
Our partner repair shop has performed neck straightening and fret leveling.
The neck is in good condition, with approximately 80% of the original fret height remaining. Both playability and tone are impeccable.
Perhaps due to the over-lacquer, the tone comes across as somewhat tight, but it resonates beautifully for its age. The bass is tight and well-defined, giving the instrument a sense of cohesion. It is truly the perfect instrument for accompanying vocals.
The blue case is also in relatively good condition. While there is some warping, dirt, scratches, and rust or tarnish on the metal parts, there are no missing handles, emblems, hardware, or rivets, and the case latches close securely.
