The DiMarzio EJ Custom was designed in collaboration with Eric Johnson, known for his meticulous tone and attention to detail. While he’s best recognized as a Stratocaster player, Eric also sought the rich, articulate sound of his favorite humbucker-equipped guitars. After acquiring a ’59 Les Paul reissue, he asked DiMarzio if they could make it sound like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman—and the result was the EJ Custom.

This full-size humbucker offers exceptional clarity and presence, delivering shimmering highs and definition without ever sounding thin. Eric himself remarked that the EJ Custom was “almost as clear as a Strat pickup,” while maintaining warmth and focus even under heavy distortion. The result is a pickup that retains note separation and sparkle whether you’re fingerpicking clean or pushing into high gain.

Despite DC resistance specs similar to vintage PAF-style humbuckers, the EJ Custom differs in two key ways: it has lower output and significantly more treble response. The tone is bright and open like a single-coil, yet still full and balanced with solid bass response—ideal for chord work, articulate solos, and expressive playing across styles.
