The Roland VK-7 is an electronic keyboard introduced in 1997, designed to simulate the sound of the Hammond electromechanical organ. Like other electronic instruments that emulate (or “clone”) the sound of Hammond tonewheel organs, the VK-7 is classified as a clonewheel organ. It has since been replaced by the VK-8 and VK-88 models.

Transporting the heavy vintage electromechanical Hammond organs to gigs was cumbersome, creating strong demand among musicians for a more portable way to recreate the Hammond sound. Advances in emulation technology eventually led to the development of lighter electronic keyboards, such as the Roland VK-09 (1981), KORG BX-3 and CX-3 (1980), Roland VK-7 (1997), and Kurzweil K2600 (1999), which can produce a realistic recreation of the classic Hammond tone.

The Roland VK-7 is designed to recreate the organ sounds typical of 1960s and 1970s jazz and pop music.
It features nine harmonic drawbars, allowing the organist to control the volume of different overtones and shape the desired tone.
The instrument also provides vibrato, chorus, and reverb effects, along with an overdrive knob that adds the characteristic “growl” of vintage tube amplifiers. Like most clonewheel keyboards, the drawbars are positioned to the left of the keyboard.

Unlike the original Hammond organ, which had two manuals (keyboards), the VK-7 has a single 61-key manual. However, the keyboard can be split into two sections, so that the bass drawbars are applied to the lower section and the nine upper drawbars to the rest of the keyboard.
This split function allows the organist to play basslines in the low register and chords or solos in the high register on a single keyboard.
Effect and registration settings are displayed on a small LCD screen.

The instrument also includes an orchestral voice section that can be layered with the organ sounds, including strings, brass, choirs, percussion instruments (such as glockenspiel), and bass sounds.

The VK-7 features an 11-pin rotary connector, which allows it to be connected to an external rotary speaker, such as a Leslie Speaker.
It also has MIDI inputs and outputs, enabling the use of bass pedal keyboards or the connection of a second MIDI keyboard, allowing two manuals with different preset tones.

The chassis of the instrument has a wood finish with alder side panels, giving the VK-7 an elegant, vintage appearance.
