Steve Ferrone's Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Gretsch - Vintage "Bop Outfit", Round Badge Set, 20", 16", 13" 1960-1962 - Midnight Blue Pearl
There are bad asses, and there are BAD ASSES!! Steve Ferrone would be the later.
In the world of "first call” drummers, Steve Ferrone is the first one they call. Just ask Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, George Harrison, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Rick James, Slash, Chaka Khan, Bee Gees, Al Jarreau, Mick Jagger or Johnny Cash. When iconic bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Average White Band, Duran Duran and Aerosmith needed to replace their “irreplaceable” drummers, Steve Ferrone was the guy who stepped up.
Steve played a lot of drums throughout his career and he's saved almost every one of them. He has drums from Ludwig, Pearl, DW, Gretsch, Rogers and more. Some are custom made, some are rare prototypes, all are stellar drums. Nothing made it into his collection unless it was exceptional.
He’s thinning down his collection to just the drums he needs for his current gig with Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, and his steady stream of session dates.
Steve’s collection is being offered for sale, hoping these drums find buyers who appreciate their history and continue making great music with them.
Steve Ferrone has long been a believer in The Great Gretsch Sound and has played Gretsch's since his early years with The Average White Band. Steve bought this set in the late 1990s, not long after joining Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. It's been in regular rotation in his collection of studio drums ever since, used on countless sessions. 20x14, 13x9 and a 16x16 floor all in Midnight Blue Pearl finish. The set is functionally perfect but the Midnight Blue finish on the bass drum shows some minor grazing and a small split on the bottom section of the drum. You can see the condition accurately in the photos. Most importantly, the set sounds fantastic. Nothing went into Steve's drum collection unless it sounded extraordinary.
This is a bad ass studio set that has proven itself under the scrutiny of the top producers and engineers in the business.
Steve's drum collection was featured in the April 2026 issue of Modern Drummer Magazine.
Includes a pair of Steve's stage played signature model drumsticks and COA signed by Steve Ferrone.
