MINI P90 Mk III - Handmade Strat sized Neodymium Coil Tap Pickup for Bridge position.
Please note: The pickup does not have a removable cover, therefore their color cannot be changed. However, it can also be produced in black and cream, the availability of which must be requested before making the purchase.
Handcrafted pickup for the bridge position, equipped with two different output levels (coil tap), suitable for directly replacing Strat sized pickups, without the need for any adaptation (or, at least, a slight enlargement just of the hole on the pickguard plate).
It is particularly dedicated to those who love the typical timbre of the P90 but are not willing to enlarge the opening on their guitar and/or to accept the aesthetic change.
The coil (which has identical physical characteristics to those of the P90, except for the lateral extension) was wound by guiding the copper wire by hand. Unlike the MINI P90 Mk I and HALF DOLLAR models, and similarly to the MINI P90 Mk II (having traditional single output coil) the MINI P90 Mk III are wound using AWG44 wire instead of AWG42.
This means that since the wire is thinner (0.050 mm instead of 0.063 mm), on the same type of bobbin also used for the MINI P90 MkI and the HALF DOLLAR it is possible to wind a greater number of coils, with the same volume occupied by them.
Consequently, thanks also to a powerful neodymium magnet system, the level of output boasted by this pickup is unknown to the vast majority of other existing single coils, standard format P90 included (especially if equipped with AlNiCo magnets). Output levels aside, compared to the MINI P90 Mk I, the voicing is characterized by a greater emphasis on medium-low frequencies, due to the resonance peak of the coil characterized, in fact, by a greater number of turns.
While the Rs of the MINI P90 Mk II Bridge is 12.6 Kohm (measured at an ambient temperature of 26°C), the Rs of the MINI P90 Mk III Bridge is 8.8 Kohm (from the COOL or Coil Tap output) and 13.6 Kohm (from the HOT or FULL COIL output).
By taking the signal from the Coil Tap output via an appropriate dedicated switch, you get a tone close to that of a classic single Strat, i.e. brighter and not too high level. On the other hand, by taking the signal from the Full Coil output, the tone becomes rounder and more full-bodied, with a generous output level, therefore, with an even more "P90" character than the same MINI P90 Mk II Bridge.
Pole spacing: 52mm.
The MINI P90 Mk III are also available for the middle position (Rs = 8.5 Kohm) and for the neck position (also of the Coil Tap type, with Rs = 8.2 and 12.4 Kohm) and each pickup can also be requested in black or cream. The middle position pickup is RWRP compared to the others.
The waxing was carried out in a mixture of paraffin and beeswax (3:1 w/w), to ensure immunity against the triggering of unwanted squeal, maintained over time.
The connection cable is shielded.
The bare of the cable must always be welded to mass. The Coil Tap level signal is taken from the white wire, while the Full Coil level signal is taken from the red wire.
The entire MINI P90 Mk II set can also be requested already installed on a prewired pickguard, for the total price of 319 euros + shipping costs.
