Up for sale is a Yamaha SG-85, a rare early SG model produced for only a short period between 1972 and 1974.

The SG-85 is considered the predecessor to Yamaha's famous double-cutaway SG models, including the SG-175 and SG-1000. Thanks to its distinctive rounded body shape, it is affectionately known among collectors as the "Daruma SG."

One of the highlights of this model is its premium construction. Both the body and neck are crafted from Honduran mahogany, a highly desirable tonewood that has become increasingly difficult to obtain, while the fingerboard is made from ebony, giving the guitar an upscale specification rarely found on instruments from this period.

Tonally, the SG-85 has a character all its own. Unlike the later double-cutaway SG models, which are known for their thick and focused sound, the SG-85 delivers a warmer, softer voice with the rich resonance and natural sweetness that Honduran mahogany is known for. The original pickups provide plenty of output while remaining clear and balanced, making the guitar suitable for a wide variety of playing styles.

Another standout feature is the original wraparound bridge, which allows individual intonation adjustment for each string. In addition to its distinctive vintage appearance, it offers precise setup capability that is uncommon for wraparound bridge designs of the era.

The truss rod functions properly and still has adjustment room in both directions. The guitar is currently set up with the neck nearly straight, featuring a string action of approximately 1.50 mm on the high E string and 1.75 mm on the low E string at the 12th fret, providing comfortable playability with no significant fret buzz.

If you've been searching for an early Yamaha SG with premium tonewoods, vintage character, and historical significance, this is an excellent opportunity.
