Vintage Beyerdynamic M81 HL – Great on guitar amps, glorious on bass cabs

The Beyerdynamic M81 HL is one of those vintage West German dynamics that never had to shout to prove its worth. Solid, elegant, and built with that classic Beyer sense of purpose. It’s a microphone that feels just as good in the hand as it does in front of an amp. Think classic 1970s West German utility with musical attitude: wide usable bandwidth, great low end and that “why isn’t this more famous?” versatility on drums, guitars, piano and room captures. Sound Character
Focused, punchy, and full of old-school authority. The M81 HL has a nicely controlled low end, present mids, and enough top-end detail to keep things lively without ever getting pushy. On guitar amps it brings bite, body, and that satisfying vintage edge that sits beautifully in a mix. On bass cabs, though, it’s something of a secret pleasure: strong low-end information, clear mid definition, and that wonderfully weighty, slightly textured vintage tone that makes bass feel alive rather than merely big. It’s also excellent on toms, percussion, and other close-miked sources where you want character and control in equal measure.

Condition
Very good overall. The microphone shows only light scratch marks on the underside, while the rest presents very nicely. The internal foam is still in good shape and has not been replaced, which is always nice to see on a vintage mic like this.
