With the original Op-Amp Big Muff from the late 1970s selling for exorbitant prices, Mike Matthews decided to reissue this classic pedal at a price that more players could afford. The new Op-Amp Big Muff's circuitry faithfully replicates that of the original, also known as the IC or V4 Big Muff, and adds some practical features like a compact die-cast chassis and true bypass.

The Op-Amp Big Muff was first used by the brilliant Billy Corgan on the Smashing Pumpkins' 1993 album "Siamese Dream," which put it in the spotlight. After filming a demo video of the unit, Billy Corgan had this to say about the reissue model: "The magic's still in the box. I can still get what I'm looking for." Mike Matthews

To create its signature sound, this pedal uses an op-amp instead of a transistor as the amplification element, and has three gain stages instead of the traditional four. Kit Rae, a Big Muff collector and historian, describes the sound as follows: "It's a very loud, destructive Big Muff sound, with more distortion. It's perfect for grunge, wall-of-glass distortion, heavy rhythms, and leads."
