If you're looking at this, you already know the deal—this is arguably the most organic, musical, and dynamic multi-channel D/A converter ever built. The MDAC-8 is the rare, 8-channel sibling to Fred Forssell's legendary two-channel MDAC-2. It features his definitive architecture, famed for its massive low-end weight, incredible transients, and a completely lifelike mid-range body. Now that Fred has officially retired, these boutique, hand-built masterpieces are nearly impossible to find. High-end mastering houses and top-tier mixing engineers covet these because they present a whole, cohesive sound stage without any artificial high-end sheen.

It's in flawless working order and has been rarely used in a clean, smoke-free studio environment. The cosmetic condition is excellent, showing just a few very small, almost invisible marks from light use.

The Tech Specs

• Pure Class A JFET Circuitry: Completely discrete analogue section with zero IC op-amps. The transient response on kick drums, acoustic guitars, and vocals is stunningly fast and natural.
• Digital Inputs: Features 4 AES3 (XLR) digital input streams on the rear panel to ingest all 8 channels of audio.
• Analogue Outputs: 8 pristine channels of balanced, floating analogue output delivered via a standard DB-25 connector (wired to the Tascam/Avid/Digidesign standard).
• Sample Rates: Supports mastering-grade clocking and conversion from 44.1kHz all the way up to 192kHz Fs.
• Front Panel Indicators: Minimalist and puristic workflow. Features dedicated front-panel "Error" and "Lock" LEDs for each of the four AES3 digital input streams so you can instantly verify your digital sync.

Note on Calibration

This unit is currently set for a custom calibration of 0VU = -20dbfs (Per Fred's design: "I will change the –20 dBfs jumper resistors on the circuit board to actually be for 0 VU instead of 0 dBu. The rest of the jumpers will be as marked on the circuit board… referenced to 0 dBu."). If your studio relies on a different alignment, you can simply remove the top chassis cover and move the internal jumpers to your preferred reference level. Everything inside is clearly labeled.

Note on Voltage & Global Power

It's currently set for 220V/230V mains power. However, like the companion ADC unit, you can effortlessly open the chassis cover and flip the internal AC voltage switch to 110V/115V should you ever need to do so. You just need to change the switch position and swap the rear fuse to match the target voltage—no external transformers or step-down converters required.

Price & Offers

Regarding the price: because these 8-channel mastering units are incredibly rare, it is almost impossible to find recent used sales data online. The 2-channel versions regularly sell for top dollar, but this is the full 8-channel powerhouse that originally cost closer to £4,000+ ($5,600+) new.
