Compact FM synthesizer with more voices and memory locations

The volca fm 2 from Korg boasts a number of improvements compared to its predecessor model while maintaining the same ease of use. The number of voices has been doubled from three to six and the number of internal memory locations has also been increased from 32 to 64. In addition to Chorus, there is now a reverb effect that gives the DX7 bells the typical sound of 80s pop culture. The MIDI In socket has been replaced by MIDI In and Out via a separately available . The Display has also been upgraded and is now light blue instead of red.

History

At the beginning of the 1980s, Yamaha introduced the DX7, a digital synthesizer the likes of which the music-making world had never heard before. Its sound and, above all, the extraordinary sound creation possibilities of the then new FM synthesis marked an important turning point and milestone in the history of synthesizers. To this day, the old DX series enjoys great popularity and can be found in numerous variations.

FM synthesis in the here and now

The volca fm 2 has the same sound architecture as its historical predecessor and therefore has 6 operators and 32 algorithms that can be used to create a sea of classic synth sounds as well as totally wacky, atonal sounds with a metallic character. One of the special features of the FM-Synthese is that, depending on the configuration of the operators, even changing a single parameter by just a few values tends to drastically change the sound. Original DX7 sounds can also be imported via the MIDI connection. For more detailed settings and a better overview of all parameters, Korg offers the free . The sound generation, which has been expanded to six voices, is rounded off with the two Chorus and reverb.

Sequencer with parameter automation

The volca-typical sequencer stores 16 patterns with a total step length of up to 16 steps in its memory. By linking patterns, lengths of up to 256 steps are possible. A number of parameters can be recorded directly in a motion sequence for each pattern. The sequencer is rounded off by live tempo control options and a Arpeggiator with nine different motifs, which should provide Italo disco moments, especially in combination with the FM-Synthese.
