Up for sale is my Electro-Harmonix Big Muff π. The legend is true: once you hit the sweet spot, it dominates everything. This iconic pedal creates massive, thick walls of distortion.

Marking the closing chapter of Sovtek manufacturing in St. Petersburg, the Black Russian V8 stands as the final Russian-built iteration of the legendary Big Muff, produced from 1999 until escalating production expenses brought the run to an end in 2009.

At its core, the pedal runs on the classic BM-1 circuit topology shared with the previous Green Russian and large-box Black Russian models. It delivers the signature Sovtek voice: massive sustain straddling the boundary between woolly fuzz and focused distortion. Tonally, it trades a fraction of the sub-bass warmth found in early "Civil War" units for a raspier, more aggressive midrange bite with distinct harmonic grit.

Hardware & Circuit Architecture

•     Enclosure: Second-edition V8 variant featuring the compact, lighter four-screw sheet-metal chassis (differentiating it from the earlier, heavier six-screw first edition).
•     Switching: Upgraded mechanical true-bypass switching found on select later V8 production units.
•     Component Loadout: Discrete NPN silicon transistors (BC549C / C547C pairings), quality film capacitors, and carbon-film resistors, preserving the raw, unpolished analog clipping of the Soviet line.
•     Power: 9V battery operation
•     Packaging Heritage: Early runs of this 4-screw revision (1999–2000) briefly retained the iconic stamped wooden military-style crates before Electro-Harmonix transitioned to standard corrugated cardboard packaging.
• An authentic snapshot of late-90s EHX history, combining vintage Russian fuzz genetics with improved pedalboard practicality and true bypass reliability.
