Red Box overdrive is based on Craig Anderton's Tube Sound Fuzz circuit from 1977. As in the original we use the CD4049UBE CMOS inverter which was not originally designed for this purpose but...Who are we to question Craig Anderton?
As it is not a typical overdrive circuit, its sound is not like any other overdrive either. A harmonic overdrive, reminiscent of a crunchy tweed amp, sound that ranges from soft and warm to thick and burly.
The CD4049 was somewhat noisy with a characteristic hiss in the background that you will notice when you use it in "V" (vintage) mode. If, on the other hand, you love a tone without interference or background noise, the "M" (modern) mode is your thing.
