The Korg SQ-64 is a polyphonic desktop sequencer offering three tracks for instruments and one for drums. The feature-rich control panel includes all 64 steps that can be programmed per track, corresponding to four bars of 16 steps each. For each step , you can programme theGate, pitch and mod value separately. If fewer than 64 steps are required in a track, you can shorten them using the ‘Loop’ function, thereby also achieving odd numbers of steps. For each track, you can set, amongst other things, the playback direction and Timing (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, including Triplets) can be defined. In total, the unit stores 64 projects; each project contains per track (3x Synth, 1x Drums) 64 Pattern; furthermore, you can Pattern chain them together. The three synth tracks are polyphonic up to 8 voices when output via MIDI, but are generally monophonic via the analogue CV/Gate/Modoutputs, however, they are always monophonic. The drum track is programmable for up to 16 voices, eight of which are output via the trigger outputs. The Korg SQ-64, optimised for live performance, also features a Arpeggiator that literally conjures up hypnotic sequences at the touch of a button. To enable you to get started straight away without needing a whole array of equipment, Korg provides a comprehensive software package as a free download.

The rear panel is impressive: MIDI In and two MIDI Out ports, Sync In/Out (e.g. for the Volca series or the SQ-1), three analogue CV/Gate/Mod outputs and eight analogue trigger outputs for drum modules. Power is supplied via USB or a 9V mains adaptor.
