Back in 2017, we brought Cory Wong into the Reverb studio to teach his funky picking technique, and more recently we've had him teach Vulfpeck's "Darwin Derby" and show off some comical lawn mower guitar moves. If you've seen him play, you'll know that his elastic right-hand technique can bring out some snappy and snaky funk from a Stratocaster.
Today, he's back to teach the Wong Signature Triplet Funk Lick—though that is the abridged name, if only because "The Wong Triplet Rhythm Porcaro Paul Jackson Jr. Ripoff Lick" is a bit of a mouthful. The trick itself is deceivingly simple: While the left-hand descends in a C major pentatonic pattern (with some variation), the right hand picking pattern moves through a muted down stroke, a punch-like hit of your strings, a staccato up stroke to ring out the fretted notes, and then another full hit.
