The Polymoog Keyboard 280a is a stripped-down version of the original 1975 Polymoog. The two are similar in appearance, sharing the same case and keyboard. The right-hand control panel is absent, while the left-hand panel has only a few sliders, giving the user less control over the sounds. The Polymoog Keyboard features more presets than its predecessor: "vox humana", "string 1", "string 2", "electric piano", "piano", "honky tonky", "clav", "harpsi", "brass", "chorus brass", "pipe organ", "rock organ", "vibes", and "funk". Control over these presets is limited to octave balance, envelope attack, and LFO modulation depth and rate. The lower two octaves may also be split off to play a separate bass tone, with some control over this tone allowed via a dedicated bass filter. Filter control of the main preset sounds is not user adjustable other than via an external controller. The best known of the presets on the Polymoog Keyboard is "Vox Humana", which was not present on the original Polymoog. This preset forms the basis of the electronic string sound in the work of Gary Numan. This impressive instrument has 71 velocity-sensitive keys and is fully polyphonic. Only 2000-ish were ever made, over 4/5 years ..thats about ten a week? Initial sales were good; a load of top pros loved them ( eg Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock),but synthesizers were racing ahead, and the SCi Prophet 5 appeared in 1977......a milestone in music!

Originally sourced from Yorkshire, this particular 280A (s/n 1660) has just returned to KKGB stock after a pro studio has made a deal for a Rhodes Mk8 (midi). Recently serviced by our expert in Bedfordshire. ...fresh LEDs fitted, and all key contacts cleaned and lubed. A standard 1/4"sustain pedal can now be used; original socket is an odd size, and therefore useless. The synth is in EXCELLENT cosmetic condition, for a 46-y-old instrument. It has to be one of the coolest-looking vintage instruments ever made. Voltage can be instantly flipped twixt 120v/240vac. All presets are totally analogue; not virtual...so all sounds are unique and distinctive. They will benefit from external processing eg reverb/compression/chorus etc, as many older synths do. No MIDI on this old classic, by the way.... Key action is perfectly acceptable, with dynamic velocity and good response.

Sounds like? OK, Gary Numan made this famous, as we all know <> Vox Humana preset speaks for itself. There are other presets, some useless ( eg clavichord)....the strings and funk are particularly good; remember its 71-voice polyphonic! Piano and organ presets can be tweaked to produce something reasonable (honky-tonk piano is a "dual" preset, so can be beefed up with the de-tune control...and is actually rather good). The action (Pratt-Read) has its own "feel", and is quite classy. Proper keyboardists liked the action very much; at the time...quote :- "very professional standard". There are plenty of reviews/videos online.
