A 120V tube stereo bus compressor that combines classic variable-bias compression with SPL’s innovative Focus and Punch hyper-compression modes.

The SPL Venos is a stereo bus compressor built around the variable-bias tube compression principle found in some of the most celebrated vintage dynamics processors. While its foundation is distinctly classic, Venos expands the concept with a wider range of compression behaviours and SPL’s 120V technology.

At the heart of Venos is a bias-controlled remote-cutoff tube circuit. Its carefully tuned controls are designed to make compression fast and intuitive to set up, while switches and detented potentiometers provide precise settings and easy recall. A single set of controls operates both channels simultaneously, making Venos particularly well suited to stereo mix bus and mastering applications.

Six operating modes determine how the compressor reacts to the incoming signal. Linear uses a 20 Hz low-frequency filter in the sidechain, preventing subsonic content from driving the compression. Modern introduces an analog band-pass filter so that very low and particularly high frequencies have less influence on the detector circuit. Vintage uses a specially developed analog sidechain filter curve created by SPL developer Wolfgang Neumann.

The Focus and Punch modes take Venos beyond conventional variable-bias tube compression. Instead of using frequency-shaping filters in the sidechain, these modes employ a dedicated circuit that changes the compressor characteristic itself. After reaching its maximum, the compression curve begins to fall, creating the distinctive hyper-compression behaviour and opening up more extreme possibilities for shaping dynamics, transients and perceived energy.

The final mode activates the external insert, allowing the compressor’s control signal to be processed or influenced by external equipment or signals.

Combined with SPL’s high-voltage 120V technology, Venos brings together the character of traditional tube compression, flexible sidechain behaviour and new approaches to dynamics processing in a stereo processor designed for mix bus and mastering work.
