Fender Musicmaster II – 1966

Introduced as one of Fender’s student models during the 1960s, the Musicmaster II offered a compact and approachable alternative to Fender’s full-size guitars. This vintage example dates to 1966 and features 21 frets and a 22.5-inch scale, giving it its distinctive 3/4-size proportions.

The exceptionally short scale and compact body provide a playing feel quite different from a standard Fender. String tension is noticeably softer, resulting in a light, effortless response that makes both chord work and fingering extremely comfortable.

This example features an A-width neck with an approximately 38mm nut width. Combined with the short scale, the slim neck contributes to the guitar’s quick and agile playability.

Tonally, the Musicmaster II has a dry, crisp and lively character. At the same time, it retains the substantial picking response associated with vintage Fender instruments, producing a surprisingly full and present sound for such a compact guitar.

The White finish, tortoiseshell-style pickguard and pearloid dot inlays make for a particularly attractive combination. Decades of natural aging, finish discoloration, scratches and signs of use have given the instrument an unmistakable vintage appearance and character.

Among Fender’s student models from the 1960s, the 22.5-inch-scale Musicmaster II has become increasingly difficult to encounter today. This is a distinctive vintage Fender with a character and playing feel all its own.
