If you've ever heard Rodrigo y Gabriela, you know just how complex Gabriela Quintero's guitar playing can be. She builds her percussive, flamenco-style rhythms out of ornate patterns and a deeply nuanced feel, the type of playing that can take a lifetime to master. But how much can you learn from it in just a few weeks?
In the latest episode of our guitar warm-up series, Gabriela was kind enough to slow down her process and teach some of its underlying parts. Even still, Joe Shadid—who has taken a week's worth of time with the warm-up routines of Mateus Asato, Cory Wong, and other great players—had to take two weeks for Gabriela's techniques.
With Gabriela, Joe uses a new G-Writer acoustic model from Gibson's Generation Collection, which we borrowed this time around from our friends at Chicago Music Exchange. Later in the video, he also employs a traditional nylon string acoustic.
The Gibson G-Writer is the same model Joe used in his last warm-up episode with Yasmin Williams, a rising star of acoustic playing.
