For sale is a Neumann TLM 170i, serial number 1651, in the highly sought after early Purple Badge version, dating from the period before Neumann switched the TLM series to the later red badges.
The microphone is in perfect working condition and sounds excellent. It can, of course, be tested in person in Mönchengladbach, Germany.
I directly compared this microphone with two other TLM 170i units. Sonically, this particular microphone comes across as slightly more open, with the low mids being a bit less pronounced compared to a Red Badge TLM 170i. As with all vintage microphones over 40 years old, slight variations between individual units are completely normal.
Cosmetically, the microphone is in good condition for its age. There are some signs of use and a few minor marks on the body, showing that this microphone has actually been used and enjoyed over the years rather than sitting untouched in a cabinet.
Inspection and testing in Mönchengladbach are highly encouraged.
