If you know, you know. The Uher M534 is one of those under-the-radar 1970s German gems that never caught the hype train – but should have. This tubular cardioid mic was built by AKG for Uher’s famous reel-to-reels. Some people call it a “poor man’s” Sennheiser MD421. Well, I’d put it this way: it’s an excellent, rock-solid, and incredibly versatile microphone that gets you very close to MD421 territory – just not at the MD421 price.
Sound Character
Tighter and more focused than a Sennheiser MD421, the M534 delivers a crisp top end and warm, confident low-mids. Thanks to the wide frequency range and the built-in Music/Speech switch, it’s a surprisingly versatile tool – killer on rack and floor toms for that warm yet articulate drum tone; equally great on guitar cabinets when you want bite without fizz; and superb on percussion, brass, or woodwinds where you need detail without harshness. It even shines on voiceover or radio-style spoken word, giving that unmistakable “vintage broadcast” vibe.
